"Shift"

After the recent loss of my son, a very distinct and emotional change has started to prevail in my work.

The lower figure, in the painting "Shift", subconsciously emerged to resemble my son Ryan... I had previously attempted a tribute portrait of him and struggled to make it work. This piece however, captured his likeness unintentionally and depicts a change, possibly my own transition in the wake of this grief.

In the time since my loss, I have shown my work very little but have opened my studio to a few friends and collectors. Some pieces, such as "Shift", have sold before being shown in a gallery setting.

Here is the painting "Shift" with it's new owner, Ted, on the day he purchased it.

Bay artist paints 'the heart of the matter'

John W. Carlson is a local paint-artist who recently has had major exhibits at the Chicago Art Matrix Gallery (in the Zhou Brothers Complex) and at Ashland University's Coburn Gallery. His work is on display at the Erie Art Museum, and also may be seen at BAYarts in Bay Village.

Carlson's studio, at the back of his home on Lake Road in Bay Village, is a place of grand activity and wonderment. We might say this of a Carlson painting – it is a harsh beauty, dark, wiry, strong, sometimes stark, occasionally leaning away from the viewer, a cacophony of sound, with droplets of paint scattered about, with hidden images, and concentrations of black and gray tension.

But look closely and you might see faint smears of color leaving dim impressions, understated beauty, like the soft rose tinge on a Degas dancer's calf, easily missed by a casual observer. And in some paintings, Carlson breaks his main patterns with large blocks of color empty of images, enamel-like, with patches of missing paint, chipped, fuzzy stains that seem wanting repair. Just like life!

These techniques might be Carlson's way of isolating his primary image within a painting, perhaps a mother's hand resting on a child's lap, a man's head bent down in puzzlement at something on the ground, a bird trying to decide on flying up or down.

Another technique along the same lines is Carlson's cutting off of a head, a foot, a shoulder at frame's end, placing them beyond the edge of the painting and out of thought. But not always out of thought, for sometimes it is the missing part that is important to his total concept.

A contradiction? No, not at all, for Carlson is making the viewer think of what's not there and what the missing object might have to do with the rest of his painting. The uses of "slant" and "gesture" are abundant in a Carlson painting. By what magic can the angle of a neck, a hand, a shoulder, a leg, or a half-closed eye give emotion and passion to a view otherwise passive and uncommitted?

This is the genius of Carlson's work. He seems to turn existence inside-out, not in its physicality, but in its essence. His subtext is "the heart of the matter." John W. Carlson is a strong example of art as communication. And he speaks in several languages.

The John W. Carlson opening at Coburn Gallery (Ashland University) was packed from open to close. Many thanks to all who attended and made this event possible.

Unfortunately, John was a bit under the weather and had to leave early (lucky for John, neighbor and fellow artist George Kocar was on hand to provide a safe ride home).

The show runs thru Dec. 13.

As a follow up to the opening, John W. Carlson will be the guest artist at the fall 2009 open painting/drawing studio sessions in the Center for the Arts 343. John W. Carlson was happy to find out that he had placed in the great Pop Shop / Red Bull Gripped Canvas skate deck show (Sept. 12 - 26) with his entry. Humor starts here, since John was in Chicago for his solo show there the week of the Gripped Canvas events he was unable to attend - he never knew anything about it more than that he had painted a deck and hoped to win. When he stopped in to say "hi" to the gang this week, they told him he took 2nd place... Cool, but when creating this post, John noted a few others saying they took 2nd... so who really knows! No biggie, the images here show John's entry. Congrats to all the winners.

Perfect weather and a fashionable Chicago crowd made last weeks Third Friday event at Zhou B Art Center the place to be. Art lovers and hipsters alike enjoyed every art filled floor but many proclaimed the 3rd floor Chicago Art Matrix Gallery solo show opening of John W. Carlson to be the highlight of the night. Three reclaimed beach charcoal on packaging cardboard works and several large raw canvas pieces pulled viewers in for closer inspection and introspective conversation with the artist.

Spotted in the creative crowd were renowned contemporary artist, Da Haung (David) Zhou; poet, Count Leonard de Montbrun; and Chicago art voice, Doris North-Schulte (WBEZ - Chicago Public Radio).

The show runs thru October 14.

Just booked a spontaneous show at Cana - a Wine and Martini Bar in Medina after the owner noticed my work at BAYarts (Thanks for the feature wall up front BAYarts). Cana is located in refurbished old building just south of the square in Medina on Smith. It will be a good place to showcase my large paintings and drawings. We are planning to hang it this week and have a midweek opening in a week or so... details to follow here soon - join us.

Last Sunday - It was a really, really great day!

Lucky is the artist who has his show rained upon... again... who cares about that... to see myse selected painting (Struggle - oil on canvas by American Artist, John W. Carlson) hanging in the Butler Institute of American Art was a dream come true. Thanks to juror (George Adams), my wonderful wife (Erin Giddings), family, friends and fans for all the incredible support and positive feedback. I appreciate it more than I can ever express.

The Annual Butler Midyear show runs thru August 23rd.
